Problem: We had raw GoPro footage and b-roll of Hip-Hop artists Andy Mineo and Wordsplayed performing their song “Shibuya Roll Call” in Japan, but no clear direction for how to turn it into a compelling music video.

Insight: I noticed that many Japanese on-location shows rely on simple, no-frills footage, then layer in playful graphic overlays to bring it to life. Since the project was inspired by and shot in Japan, this approach felt both engaging and conceptually aligned.

Execution:
I directed and designed the video using a layered, interactive approach:
  • Introduced a “waipu” (picture-in-picture) camera featuring cameos and reactions
  • Created “pop-up” moments inspired by Pop-Up Video to maintain engagement
  • Designed custom kawaii-style graphics and illustrations tied to moments in the trip
  • Incorporated VFX throughout to enhance rhythm, clarity, and viewer engagement
  • Built a visual system that blended documentary-style footage with playful, culturally-relevant design.

Outcome: The video became one of the most well-received releases, generating positive feedback from both fans and creatives.

More importantly, the core idea, layering simple footage with intentional, graphic storytelling, established a visual language that carried across the project’s branding, packaging, and marketing.
